I started this blog partly because there were things I had wanted to write about all along, but the biggest trigger was an experience I had when I spoke about generative AI at FNS.
That day, I was given the chance to speak on the theme of “practical, hands-on uses.” The very first thing I told the audience was something quite simple: “When you don’t know something, just ask a generative AI service in plain Japanese.”
It may have felt like a bit of an anticlimax, but looking back now, I still don’t think the idea itself was wrong.
After that, as the content most broadly useful to that audience and most worth knowing, I focused my talk on “the terms of service and cautions to keep in mind when using generative AI.” I later gathered what I said that day into an article: “Generative AI ‘Assumes No Responsibility’: Three Traits Seen in the Terms of Service of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google”.
On the other hand, if I had gone on to introduce the finer techniques of generative AI and the particulars of each service, there was no way it would fit into a ten-minute slot. I decided it would be better to put the finer details into a form that only those who are interested can read, and so I started writing this blog. The stance is simple: read it if you’re interested, and don’t if you don’t need to.
I don’t know whether I’ll have another chance to speak, but if I do, I imagine it will take the shape of organizing what I’ve accumulated on the blog and presenting that. That said, if you asked me whether I keep the blog going for the sake of a next talk, that isn’t quite it either. I’ll save the blog’s direction and my thought experiments for another time.
